Events in the Present: Presenting
the 21st Century
Lets get on with it!!
22/2/2006
Announcement of a new book by Siobhan Dowd due out March 2006 called A Swift Pure Cry.
June 2005
Announcement from Glassglue winner of Hackney Bohemia's Hackney Band Award of 2005
Glassglue will play again at our favourite spot, the 12 Bar
Club,
Saturday 9 July, from 8pm,
Admission is £6 or £5 with a print-out of this e-mail.
The 12 Bar Club is on Denmark St close to Tottenham Court Rd tube.
On the same bill are Spygenius and our close allies, Hungry Dog Brand.
Also with Hungry Dog Brand, and also on a saturday, we will play at the
Harbour Cafe in Broadstairs (arguably the most charming of all charming
English seaside resorts, and the most southeastern tip of southeast England,
if I remember correctly-a place of superlatives!) on the 23rd of July. Our
first out of town gig!!! I recommend combining attendance of our gig with a
visit in the afternoon to the (probably) Phoenician grotto just outside
Margate, a little known archaeological highlight in the area, conveniently
located just off the coastal hiking path from Margate to Broadstairs, which
is a splendid stroll indeed.

If you are fed up with the Turner Prize don't worry what is written below
will demonstrate the true value of conceptual art:
The Doleclaimers are no more but a new band has risen out of the primordial swamp to replace them - Preacher Casey, named after Postman Pat's local kitten molesting priest (Ok, its named after a character from the "Grapes of Wrath", but thought you might be more impressed!) We're playing at the Hope and Anchor in Upper Street, Islington. Nearest tube Highbury & Islington, or a bit further to Angel. next Friday night, 31st May, where our new blend of hip hop, r"n"b and homo erotic disco will not be unleashed on a god fearing audience, instead we'll stick with the usual mix of beer music with bum notes and made up on the night lyrics to half the songs, cos we've forgotten the real words. So why should you come along, I hear you ask? 3 reasons: 1) Lots of new songs with tunes you can whistle and scratch yourself along to, 2) We're ripping the Pogues off a bit less than we used to, 3) It'll be a laugh! (Maybe, ok maybe) So come on down to the Dublin Castle and be prepared for a life changing event - There's some better bands on with us! Spread the word! Rob Preacher Casey
There are now three Bohemian type venues housed within
derelict buidlings in Hackney London. One is a kind of Library/information
centre which aims to provide a comfortable space where there is an array
of situationist literature available on open access for those fed up with
that produced by the more mainstream publishers.
There are a number of books on 'Do it Yourself' lifestyles
and others offer new designs for collective living. Very idealistic but also
challenging.
The other is a meeting place for people to debate in other
words a real as oppsed to a virtual chat room. It is offered as an alternative
to a pub which are expensive and provides a sanctuary away from the virtual
world of computers and television... at zero cost. The theft of public
space such as libraries is leaving a void in our communities, where there
is a lack of motivation and interest to come together for a chat. Street
corners are harbouring dispossessed young people who are bored and lack inspiration.
This project is aiming to become a demonstration against boredom and is a
truly fantastic "anti business" attempt to breath some life into our virtual
and hypnotised communities.
There are many other hidden treasures within Hackney. More meeting places in side streets. One such place boasts a library and one can collectively drink coffee with other "like-minded" people from a whole array of backgrounds and cultures. As I stand amongst them I realise they are providing a service that the state fails to provide... that is a sense of well - being which is not striving to destroy but insted to build bridges between human beings unhampered by the so called worlds "wise" rulers who just want to war and build killing machines. So tucked away from these the blood lust of the world lies a sub culture culturing peaceful ideas. It is a wonderful sea where youth meets ideaology in a benign fashion. When walking around Hackney be aware of such delights which are hidden in that wonderful urban space.
London field's festival will it go ahead next year or not E-mail me to let me know if you are interested.

On Wednesday September 16th at 8 pm there will be a presentation given by Marcel Stotzler on 'The Poverty of fetishistic society' The abstract of his thesis is as follows:
'It is bad to live in necessity, but living in necessity is not a necessity' (Epikouros)
Dead Labour and History , a reinterpretation of Marx's critical theory pivoting on the immanent contradictions that render capitalism dialectical and dynamic: the dual character of work as a productive activity and social mediation; the duplication of wealth as material wealth and abstract value; and the notion of abstract and homogeneous time:
Sex, Race and Abstract Labour, Suggesting to understand the modern concepts of 'Sex' and 'race' as fetishistic, abstracting practices and relating them to social mediation through abstract labour in capitalistic society;
The Poverty of Student Life - Revisited, Undertaking an analysis of the student struggles in Germany in 1997/8 which relates to general social tendencies such as lean production, deregulation, and selection. It is stated that the majority of students try to compensate the devaluation of cultural capital by a non-conformism that is affirmatively meant to secure the exchange- value of one's own (academic) labour power. The paper seeks to discuss how the disillusionment with 'socially defensive' politics could result in a dialogue to negate the ruling monologue of commodities and images.?
