The National Library of Scotland was established by Act of Parliament in 1925; it took over the non-legal collections, including manuscripts, of the Faculty of Advocates (the Scottish Bar), whose library goes back to the 1680s. A separate Department of Manuscripts under a Keeper was created in 1927; it became a Division in the wider Department of Manuscripts, Maps and Music in 1989. The collections have grown at an ever increasing rate over the three centuries of their existence.
In principle all manuscript and archival material of all Scottish writers and artists, including those who have worked outside Scotland, is collected. The archives of related organisations and societies are also acquired. Naturally we do not compete with other repositories who have established collections of any individual. All types of material are taken.
