Alan Hopkinson
Head of Systems and Bibliographical Services, Middlesex University Learning Resources

Alan Hopkinson is Head of Library Systems and Bibliographical Services at Middlesex University. In addition, he is involved with many external activities involving library, archives and museums. He has worked for the London Borough of Camden, the British Library where he worked inter alia on the MERLIN project (an early relational database management system for bibliographic use which was incorporated into BLAISE), an IFLA project relating to UNIMARC . This was followed by some time spent working as a UNESCO consultant. After doing some projects for UNESCO in the Netherlands at the Institute for Social Studies, in Tanzania for the National Central Library and in Brazil for IBICT , he worked as Information Systems Manager at the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex, setting up MINISIS as the library automation system . He has since worked at the Tate Gallery where he implemented SIRSI's UNICORN. At Middlesex University Library, he has implemented DYNIX Horizon on a multi-site campus. (The SIRSI and DYNIX companies have now merged into SirsiDynix.)

He has been involved with the International Guide to Literary and Art Archives and controls the Web Pages of ISIS Plus, the UK CDS/ISIS User Group.  You may also see an old version of the Middlesex University Library Periodicals Catalogue which is an instance of a website which has been prepared on CDS/ISIS using records downloaded from the Library Catalogue Horizon System. The Middlesex University Catalogue on WWW ISIS is used as a backup catalogue and was the result of a cooperative project with BIREME in Sao Paulo who have worked with UNESCO to develop this web version of the CDS/ISIS software.

He is currently chairman of the UDC Consortium and IFLA’s Permanent UNIMARC Committee
